News Briefs

More schools are looking at departmentalizing at elementary level
The pressure for schools to post higher scores on standardized subject tests is resulting in a growing push to departmentalize -- or platoon -- instruction for students as young as 6 years old. While the practice of having students change classes to receive instruction from subject specialists is typical in middle school and high school, students in elementary school are typically taught by generalists under the assumption that they benefit more from the stability of staying in one classroom. http://www.hepg.org/hel/article/426

Massachusetts educators learn about cyberbullying among students
Internet cyberbullying was the focus of a recent school safety conference attended by teachers, administrators and law enforcement officers in Massachusetts. "Technology obliterates the boundary between home and school. What children do online impacts their personal lives," said keynote speaker Rosalind Wiseman, author of a popular book on school bullying among girls and founder of the Empower Program, a national effort to promote nonviolence in schools. http://www.lowellsun.com/ci_13649997

Florida district considers adding Singapore Math curriculum
Florida's Hillsborough County school district is considering supplementing its mathematics instruction with the Singapore Math curriculum, which focuses on critical-thinking skills along with visual and kinetic learning over traditional techniques for teaching math that emphasize memorization. While the program is not a shortcut to math, "it shows students there is more than one way to tackle a problem and gets them using their problem-solving skills," said one teacher who has used the curriculum for three years. http://www2.tbo.com/content/2009/oct/25/some-local-schools-look-singapore-boost-scores/

ASCD Resources to Help with H1N1 Flu
ASCD has long recognized that student health and learning go hand in hand, and the H1N1 flu pandemic has made this connection even more apparent. That's why we've created a special Web page, www.ascd.org/flu, to be your definitive source on the H1N1 virus as the school year begins. On the page you'll find a variety of resources to keep you informed about the latest H1N1 developments and help you minimize the virus's effect on your students' learning. We will continually update the page with more information as it becomes available.
